Submissions

• Manuscripts submitted for publication must be original works that have not been published elsewhere (e.g. as a journal article, book chapter, or research report) and are not under consideration by another journal. Any conflicts of interest arising from research funding or other circumstances must be disclosed at the beginning of the manuscript, immediately below the abstract.
• The topic of the manuscript must be sociologically relevant and fall within the scope of the journal. The research objectives, analytical focus, research problem, and overall approach should be grounded in a sociological perspective. The journal particularly welcomes manuscripts focusing on social processes in Hungary and/or the Central and Eastern European region, while also encouraging innovative theoretical and methodological contributions of broader relevance.
• The manuscript should follow internationally accepted standards of scholarly writing, including the following sections where appropriate: Introduction, Literature Review, Social and Cultural Context, Data and Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
• The manuscript should clearly formulate the research question and demonstrate its theoretical and societal relevance.
• The manuscript should provide a comprehensive review of the relevant and up-to-date literature and establish the theoretical concepts, analytical framework, and categories used in the analysis.
• The interpretation of the findings should consider the limitations of the data and the methodology employed.

The Editorial Board welcomes submissions in the following categories:

• Original research articles
• Book reviews
• Reports on academic events

The journal accepts manuscripts in both Hungarian and English.

All authors publishing in “Review of Sociology” are expected to comply with the ethical principles and Code of Ethics of the Hungarian Sociological Association, including the guidelines concerning plagiarism and other issues of research integrity.

If the research has received ethical approval, authors are requested to include a statement to this effect at the end of the manuscript and provide the reference number of the approval. A template for the ethics statement is available for download[RG12.1] from the journal's website.

For research involving sensitive topics and/or vulnerable populations, the Editorial Board strongly recommends that authors obtain ethical approval prior to the commencement of the research.

• In the interest of scientific transparency, the Editorial Board encourages the submission of manuscripts whose underlying data and/or other research materials are accessible to other researchers.
• Upon submission, authors are required to indicate whether the research data and related documentation are available to other researchers (e.g. as online supplementary material accompanying the article, through an institutional data repository, or via an online platform such as the Open Science Framework (OSF) or GitHub). If the research data and related documentation are publicly available, authors should provide the relevant links or persistent identifiers in the manuscript.
• For manuscripts involving statistical analyses and/or other computational methods, the Editorial Board encourages authors to make their statistical syntax, analytical code, and/or source code publicly available in accordance with the principles of Open Science. For quantitative studies, authors are also encouraged to conduct robustness and/or sensitivity analyses where appropriate.
• For experimental studies, the Editorial Board particularly welcomes manuscripts whose research design, hypotheses, and analytical procedures were preregistered prior to data collection on an independent online platform (e.g. the Open Science Framework (OSF) or the AEA RCT Registry).
• Authors conducting qualitative research (e.g. based on interviews or participant observation) are likewise encouraged to consider whether qualitative data and related research materials, such as interview protocols, interview guides, coding schemes, or analytical frameworks, can be shared while respecting ethical and legal requirements.

Authors should include a Data Availability Statement at the end of the manuscript, immediately before the References. A template for this statement is available for download from the journal's website.

• Manuscripts must be submitted through the journal's Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. After registering, authors may submit their manuscripts by clicking the Submit Manuscript button at: szociologiaiszemle.hu.
• Manuscripts submitted by email cannot be considered.
• A technical guide to the submission process is available for download from the journal's website.

• An ORCID iD is required for all authors at the time of submission. ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) provides a unique digital identifier that distinguishes researchers and ensures the accurate attribution of their scholarly outputs. Creating an ORCID iD takes only a few minutes, and registration is available through the official ORCID website.

The Editorial Board accepts manuscripts in Microsoft Word format or in another editable file format compatible with Microsoft Word. A manuscript template is available for download from the journal's website.

Non-anonymized version
The original (non-anonymized) version of the manuscript should include the following on the first page:

• The full names of all authors. A footnote should provide each author's institutional affiliation, academic position, email address, and ORCID iD.
• The title of the manuscript in both Hungarian and English.
• An abstract in both Hungarian and English (maximum 200 words each).
• Three to five keywords in both Hungarian and English.
• Any acknowledgements and information on research funding should be included in the first footnote attached to the title.

Anonymized version
The anonymized version of the manuscript should:

• Be identical in content to the original manuscript but must not contain the authors' names, affiliations, identifiable research projects, or funding information that could reveal the authors' identity.
• Refer to the authors' own previous publications in the third person, in the same manner as references to the work of other authors.
• Have all personal information removed from the document properties. (For Microsoft Word documents, detailed instructions are available in the journal's technical guide.)

If figures or tables are embedded in the manuscript in a non-editable format, authors are requested to upload them separately in an editable format whenever the software used to create them allows this.

Authors may also submit a cover letter outlining the main contribution of the manuscript and its relevance to the existing literature. Submission of a cover letter is optional.

For original research articles, the journal generally expects manuscripts with a main text of approximately 40,000 characters (including spaces).

Where justified – particularly in the case of qualitative research articles – longer manuscripts may be considered. However, such manuscripts must not exceed 60,000 characters (including spaces).

For book reviews, the expected length is between 12,000 and 20,000 characters (including spaces).

Szociológiai Szemle follows the APA 7th edition citation style.

Authors using Zotero should select "American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition" as the citation style.

In-text citations
In-text citations should appear in parentheses immediately after the referenced text.

• Separate the author's surname and the year of publication with a comma.
  • One author: (Kovács, 2025)
  • Two authors: (Kovács & Tóth, 2025)
  • Three or more authors: (Kovács et al., 2025)
• If the author's name forms part of the sentence, only the publication year should appear in parentheses.
  Example: Kovács et al. (2025) found that…
• If multiple works are cited within the same parentheses, they should be separated by semicolons.
  Example: (Kovács, 2025; Tóth, 2004)
• Direct quotations must include the page number.
  Example: (Kovács, 2025, p. 35)
• If several works by the same author published in the same year are cited, distinguish them by lowercase letters following the year. The same notation must also be used in the reference list.
  Example: (Kovács, 2025a, 2025b)

Reference List
The References section should appear on a separate page following the main text.

The reference list should include all works cited in the manuscript, arranged in strict alphabetical order by the surname of the first author, ensuring that every in-text citation can be matched to a corresponding reference.

Articles published in “Review of Sociology” are assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Therefore, authors are requested to include the DOI for every cited work whenever one is available, using the following format:

Guidelines for tables and figures:

• All tables and figures should be embedded in the manuscript, numbered consecutively, and provided with a descriptive title (e.g. Table 1, Figure 1).
• The titles of tables, row and column headings, and explanatory notes should be written in the language of the manuscript.
• Equations should be inserted as editable text rather than as images.
• Tables and figures should be self-explanatory and understandable without reference to the main text. Titles, labels, and notes should be concise while providing all essential information (e.g. units of measurement). Figures should include appropriately labelled axes and measurement units where applicable.
• Every table and figure must include a source note, including those prepared by the authors (e.g. Source: Authors' own compilation based on the 2001 Population Census).
• Please ensure consistency in the use of decimal places and measurement units throughout the manuscript.
• As the printed version of the journal is published in black and white, figures should either be prepared in grayscale or use sufficiently contrasting colours to remain clearly interpretable when printed in grayscale.
• Figures should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
• A template for preparing tables is available for download from the journal's website.

Quotations from the literature or interview material should be indicated using quotation marks and italic formatting.

Quotations of 40 words or fewer should be incorporated into the main text. Quotations of more than 40 words should be presented as block quotations on a separate line and indented from both the left and right margins.

The manuscript should be organized into main headings and, where appropriate, subheadings and lower-level headings. Headings should not be numbered.

Authors are encouraged to avoid extensive bullet-point or numbered lists whenever possible.

“Review of Sociology” offers the possibility of publishing online supplementary materials.

The Editorial Board recommends the use of supplementary materials when they are necessary for understanding the manuscript but are too extensive to include in the printed article, or when authors wish to provide media files or other materials that improve the presentation of the research.

Research data and research documentation may also be made available as online supplementary materials.

Authors may request the publication of supplementary materials in other justified cases as well.

Online supplementary materials will appear in the published article as hyperlinks directing readers to the supplementary files.

Authors who use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools capable of generating content must disclose their use within the manuscript and specify the following:

• the developer or provider,
• the name of the AI tool or model,
• the version (where applicable),
• the date of use,
• and the specific purpose for which the tool was used.

Disclosure is not required when AI tools are used solely to improve the readability or language of the manuscript. Nevertheless, authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.

Prompts and workflows used for data preparation, data analysis, or figure generation should be documented in accordance with the FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), deposited in a publicly accessible repository, and cited in the manuscript.

Authors are solely responsible for the accuracy, authenticity, and originality of the manuscript.

Artificial intelligence tools must not be listed as authors.

An AI Use Statement should be included at the end of the manuscript, immediately before the References. A template for this statement is available for download from the journal's website.

Following completion of the peer review process, the Editorial Board makes the final decision regarding acceptance of the manuscript.

Accepted manuscripts undergo language editing and technical copy-editing before publication.

The final typeset version is published online first, assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), and may be cited immediately.

The print version is published after the complete issue has been finalized.

Each corresponding author receives one complimentary print copy of the issue.
