Abstract

In her book ‘Bebírók’ and ‘gyüttmentek’ [Incomers]: The Motivations and Perceptions of People Moving from Cities to Rural Areas, and the Consequences of Their Move for Rural Development, Kyra Tomay examines the motivations of urban middle-class intellectuals moving to rural areas, the evolving relationships between newcomers and local residents, and the impacts of this process on rural villages through the analytical lens of gentrification. Its empirical foundation consists of nearly three hundred interviews conducted across several field sites in Hungary. Alongside identifying broader trends, the author uses case studies highlighting local specificities—covering two geographical regions and five villages—and draws on a nuanced conceptual framework for interpreting rural gentrification in the Hungarian context.
